Strait of Hormuz disruption
A significant share of global fertilizer supply now passes through two trade chokepoints under stress, the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea.
These routes are critical for fertilizers and raw materials. Countries upstream of the Strait of Hormuz account for the following shares of global trade:
Ammonia: 23% of global trade
Urea: 34% of global trade
Sulfur: 49% of global trade
MAP+DAP: 18% of global trade
In addition to the potential physical disruption to nitrogen and phosphate exports through the Strait of Hormuz, further ripple effects are also emerging:
Natural gas curtailments to fertilizer producers in South Asian countries (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh) that rely on imported gas from the Middle East.
Rising natural gas prices globally, particularly in Europe where marginal-cost nitrogen producers are located.
If disruptions persist, the impacts could be felt far beyond the region, particularly in South Asia and Latin America, where reliance on Middle Eastern fertilizer imports is highest.
